MOORE IDEAS IN THE RAIN

Always make other people run !

Always make other people run !

Delighted to welcome the boys back after shooting with so many girls. We had a very happy time as we spent half an hour shooting the lads as they larked in the mud, graciously accepting my ideas, including getting wet sitting on the leaves in the woods. It rained throughout but that did not deter our shoot at all.

Looks lovely but they were trying to push each other off the bank behind.

Looks lovely but they were trying to push each other off the bank behind.

Nice flat light but low levels resulted in shooting at fast ISO to keep the shutter speed up.   I also added to the entertainment by falling flat on my face as we climbed through a broken fence.

WE’RE BACK

OrangeandblackFORBLOGRGB

We have field tested the new look but feel free to add your comments

Its been a very long time. Somehow after getting back from our brilliant Cornish Hols, our feet never touched the ground. Shireen joined the business between school runs and has been invaluable in liaising with our lab and framers. Cromarty has grown and still sees the studio as his home. We have had a great first year, with some very interesting adventures and now we will share them with you. 2010 is the year of the new brand. We have worked with all our agencies to bring a whole new Wild Highlander brand to you. Fresh, Young , Orange and Black and with a unique URL. Our web and network teams believe that we are the first people to register a mobile phone number as as url. So if you have our logo you have all our details. I expect that this will catch on. But On with the show and welcome to 2010 and the New Wild Highlander.

FIRST LINK IN THE BLOGCHAIN

In response to the Blogchain started by IDLE (see http://idle-idle.blogspot.com/).

OK (As I also admire the audibly haggard R2 late evening twinset), lets start with obscurity. My link is Queens of the Stone Age ‘No One Knows’. Why (apart from the genius of being the band that released the album Music for the Deaf) is that Stone word – Ah ha – very tenuous you say – but not so.

Queens of the Stone Age supported the Rolling Stones in LA and Las Vegas on their 2006 Bigger Bang tour and caused some controversy. Frontman Josh Homme (sic) suggesting that the Rolling Stones only released albums these days to remind people they are alive and not because they had anything creative to offer. Why not bite the hand etc etc.

WHY THIS SONG? As it happens a great song with a classic metronomic riff worthy of many of their peers and even Peers (Sir Mick) that lifts them to the heights that encouraged Dave Grohl to play with them and record their ‘Songs for the Deaf’ album.

FYI – Just announced – the new super – weird – group called Them Crooked Vultures consisting of Homme, Grohl and John Paul Jones of Led Zep fame. UK Tour dates just announced.FYIPlymouth Pavilions (December 10)Portsmouth Guildhall (11)Blackpool Empress Ballroom (13)Birmingham O2 Academy (14)Edinburgh O2 Academy (15)London HMV Hammersmith Apollo (17)

Anyhow – its a starter for ten. Queens of the Stone Age with No One Knows – any takers??

MOTHERSHIP

I was asked by my friend – the fabulous Lisa Kwei to come and shoot her band at the ACM Guildford Electric Theatre for their finals. I was granted a ‘test shoot’ by the Academy to shoot the band and here are some of the images – reproduced with kind permission of Lisa Kwei and Mothership.

I appreciate the kindness of the Academy for Contemporary Music for letting me shoot the band. Any future work with them will by subject to their copyright and not available here.

THE GODFATHER

It was a great pleasure to be visited by the Mike Crowe on Wednesday. He came to have his photograph taken and then for lunch. I shall not write too much about him now as he will think I am drafting an obituary but suffice it to say we think he is the best. This picture is one that he probably wont like as he seems to prefer colour but I believe that it shows him is a good light.

VICTORIA CROSS

This weekend I had the honour of meeting and photographing L/Cpl Johnson Beharry, the first living VC in 40 years, who should have died and refused. He is a large, gentle and gathered man who, like many of the bravest I have met, shows a quiet and unassuming face belying the reality of his abilities, his determination and his tenacity.
He spoke with the children at the school and then sat for over 4 hours, signing his book, dressed in his Blues in the blazing sun while parents stood in a never ending queue;  ignoring the sports day, their children and each other. Each handed over £20 each for his signed book and the money goes to the charity ‘Help for Heroes’ on this, the first armed services day.
Mr Beharry is not just an ambassador, he is a dignified man and as with many men like him, who have been places and undertaken experiences that were beyond their imagining, he brings humility and thoughtfulness in his wake.

L/Cpl Johnson Beharry. It is not everyday you see a real Victoria Cross, let alone photograph the person who won it

L/Cpl Johnson Beharry. It is not everyday you see a real Victoria Cross, let alone photograph the person who won it

That was my first impression and I was a soldier for 10 years and from an army family. I shall now read his book. But my overwhelming impression is that he is what a proud woman would call a fine son.

NOT A TOY

I never get much chance these days – not a whinge! – to shoot things that do fascinate me. I am talking about the not every day stuff like snakes, bugs and animals. I am reminded of this by a Tarantula that I shot (sic) yesterday at a school I am working with. I can show you this because the EC has yet to establish model release rights for spiders.

The joy I did not feel! But RESPECT - Oh yeah!

WILD ANIMALS

We love to shoot images of children and animals – despite the constant advice to the contrary.  This was shot in the wilds behind the studio. It was a quick shoot to round off a project that started a year and a half ago. In hindsight I am certain that we only scratched the surface but I am pleased with the pictures. This image is the one that was chosen for a present and is speeding on its way to One Vision and transformation into a box framed image about three feet wide! It will knock their socks off and is a fitting summary to our project.

Well directed images make all the difference

Well directed images make all the difference

There are 10 other prints form this programme that have been framed from simple 7×5 images through 12×16s and onto this 36×13 image. Most of the work was completed in Lightroom with the client present. It is always good to get feedback and even art direction. Heaven knows it is good to work with opinionated people – at least they know what they want. Much of this image was directed by the boy in the picture. He is a great art director – or may be one day.

THEY DON’T GET BETTER THAN THIS

We have been generating sigificant interest with our Schools Photography lately. it seems that the Camera Operator is just not a photographer – we all faint with shock! Many of the schools around us are sick of the habit of schools photographs, badly done and badly packaged. There is no doubt that this is a volume market but it amazes us how little some schools are involved in managing and exploring this service to parents and children.

The challenge is to create great pictures by rote - I said it was a challenge!

Corporate Angles

Our Corporate services are highly sought after at the moment. So many people have come to us asking us to create the right images for their brand, quick stock and ongoing archive of activity. It seems that just when you forgot to take a picture – you need one!

it is always worth paying attention to details. It is not about the money - it is about a professional approach to your clients needs.

We are always happy to oblige – even at short notice!  These were taken for CBRE at MIPIM in Cannes. An easy grab shot whilst shooting the stand and some added-value for a client who has not had to pay for an extra session.
